Everything Wrong with Trump & Kanye’s Luncheon

During Kanye West’s 10 minute speech– more like scattered rant at the Oval Office on Thursday, he explained many reasons as to why he “loves” Trump so much. From the republican making West feel like superman and stating that “racism can’t control [him]”, this luncheon was nothing short of bizzare.

On Oct. 11, 2018 West was invited along with former NFL player Jim Brown to discuss crisis going on in violent and poverty stricken areas involving African American communities. Specifically, “the resurgence in America, prison reform, how to prevent gang violence, and what can be done to reduce violence in Chicago,” White House spokeswoman, Sarah Sanders said. Only during this charade I heard no talk of reform in African American communities, which can only mean one thing. Trump invited Kanye not because he actually thought policy could get anywhere by discussing these pressing issues but because Kanye is the only African American celebrity who will say positive things about him and generate tons of media buzz in the process.

As expected, Trump is not actually doing anything for black communities by having someone completely unqualified to talk about these subjects. If Trump had actually wanted to see change in violent cities like Chicago, you’d think he would invite real social justice and policy experts to examine ways to reform the crisis. West’s statements during his trip to the White House only hurt people of color in the long run, and in no way did his comments incite change amongst any community- let alone his own.

Despite many ridiculous comments made by West throughout the meeting, there was one particular statement he made that is sure to bring only negativity to black communities- a community he should be supporting as a black man. “Welfare is the reason why a lot of black people end up being democrat,” West said, thinking he was actually breaking down politics.

This comment is the most hurtful thing you could do for African American communities- continue to perpetuate the idea that black people are the face of the welfare system and wealthy white people have to give up their money in order to support them. How can a black man want to maintain the idea that people from his community are still the reason why we have welfare in our country? I’m sure racism does not affect you, Mr. West, but African American communities are being bound and having to work around the hurtful stereotypes you are preserving.

But how can we expect anything different from a man of color who only speaks white thoughts? We are talking about a black man that is married and associated with women known to profit off black people and their ideas/culture but never speak out for social justice issues or Black Lives Matter movements. The Kardashians want to spend thousands of dollars recreating women of color features, date black men who are only associated with either the music industry or sports but never actually have to deal with the downsides of being black in America.

It is no wonder West is so obsessed with Trump, he is captivated with power and power comes with being white. West is living in a white fantasy, and his extreme narcissism and lack of empathy only mimics that of Trump’s. Despite being African American, West is benefiting from white privilege just like his wife and her sisters. Maybe you see racism as an “invisible wall” because you’ve seemingly never had to deal with the consequences of being black, Kanye.
