Rape Culture & Greek Life

Sexual Misconduct Issues In Greek Life

The prevalence of sexual misconduct discrepancies throughout college campuses is widespread, yet seems to be more prominent within Greek life. While progressive strides have aimed to nix such perversity, history has proven the deconstruction of already-existing social structures to be a complex task. Those involved in Greek life are more likely to participate in activism to improve the structures as compared to those against Greek life. Campuses themselves have also attempted to implement policies in order to reconstruct Greek life, however, there is still much to be brought to justice.

Rape Culture In Greek Life

According to an article published on KPBS linking fraternity culture to sexual assault, “victims often don’t report rapes at fraternity houses because of fear of retaliation from its members. And brotherhood loyalty pressures some fraternity members to protect known perpetrators” (Carone, 2014). The fight against so-called brotherhood bonds protecting rape culture, however, is a fight against the overpowering patriarchy and thus, the social take-down of gender norms. When it comes to the statistical likelihood of rape committed within Greek life, Lafayette News discussing the #MeToo movement researched concerns with sexual assault in Greek life and found in a CNN study that “fraternity men are three times more likely to commit rape than other men on college campuses” (Collins, 2018). The prevalence of rape culture within Greek life is a scary fact to face.
