Be Aware of Where You Shop

Fast Fashion Brand Collage

Who doesn’t love cute trendy clothes at an insanely affordable price? No one, right? Well the factory workers in third world countries and our environment doesn’t.

I know one can easily get lured into these big brands at the mall or these up and coming online stores that sell clothes at a really low rate. You’re probably thinking there’s no harm from shopping at these stores, especially if some have been established for years now and/or they have a ‘legitimate’ website. The truth is these are the brands and stores are the biggest contributors of fast fashion. A few blog post ago, I made a post about fast fashion, but didn’t really dive into the retail participants of fast fashion.

I’ll stop calling them brands/ stores and give you the names. You might know of these stores or shop at them. Hopefully this will at least make you rethink about buying from them. Also, this list is nowhere near the actual full list.

  • H&M
  • Forever 21
  • Fashion Nova
  • Shein
  • Romwe
  • Zaful
  • Zara
  • ASOS
  • Cotton on

Those are just some of the many brands/stores that are fast fashion retailers. If it’s really cheap for no reason and/or poor quality it’s probably fast fashion. Heck some brands get their clothes produced in third world sweatshops for a really low price. Yet still charge their customers seven times what it cost them.

I understand that it’s easy not to know that things aren’t happening right in-front of your face, but it is. Take some responsibility to at least being socially conscious of where you shop at.

Many of us don’t have any other option than to buy at these fast fashion stores, so I’m not gonna entice you to quit them. I would just like you to be aware of where and how you shop. There are ethically made clothes, but they are expensive. If you buy a few essentials from these stores they will last you a long time, just a tip. Thrifting is always an amazing option, I can’t stress that enough. Second hand is the way to go.

Also, don’t believe anything a brand tells you in their site, of course they want to look good. For example -I even fell victim to this- H&M claims they aren’t supporters of fast fashion, that they recycle all clothes and are ethically made. That’s a lie, with so many new products coming in and out with the period of six weeks or less. It’s hard to believe places that have sweatshops and constantly roll out new items are helping the environment.

Remember the five R’s to help you stay away from fast fashion. It’s the first step and an easy way to get started on having a sustainable, ethical wardrobe
